Patriarch calls for international protection of Palestinians

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Latin-rite Patriarch Michel Sabbah of Jerusalem said an international peacekeeping force was needed in the Holy Land to protect Palestinians under Israeli occupation. The United Nations in particular should take steps to make sure its long-standing resolutions against Israeli occupation are implemented, the patriarch said in an interview with Catholic News Service March 15. Patriarch Sabbah was in Rome with other Middle East bishops for their "ad limina" visits, which bishops make every five years to report on conditions in their dioceses. He said his biggest pastoral problems were caused by the ongoing occupation of Palestinian territory, which he said deserves more international attention and action.
